3rd April is Mother's Day in Ireland! Don't Forget!!

And its that time of the year again when we get to give our mothers a day off from the relentless task of looking after the family, the house and us. This Sunday is Mother's Day and that's the day when, for a change, you get to give mum a day off, get her some well deserved gifts, a card and maybe even treat her to lunch or dinner in a nice restaurant.

Mum's are generally practical, so they tend to appreciate it all the more if you're prepared to put a bit of thought or originality in what you get for them. A simple bunch of flowers and a card is just not that much of an effort in the imagination stakes.

Although the gift you might get may not be practical, mum will appreciate seing a bit of originality in whatever you do get her. A bit of humour always goes down a treat, maybe some retro to remind mother of those faraway days when she had a life of her own.

Pressieport Stand 6 - Ultimate Girls Day Out!

Hi everyone,

We're really excited to be attending the Ultimate Girls Day Out at the RDS on the weekend of the 27-29th August. This will be our first show and we are running around like mad trying to get organised for it.

Just when you think things are under control, you remember something else that needs to be done. Nonetheless, we know it will be well worth it and that we are going to have a great time there. We'll be exhibiting at Stand 6 which is just to the right as you come in the main entrance of the hall. We'll be showing some new products along with a huge selection from the site.

We'll also be giving away some great prizes over the 3 days and generally having a blast!

We'd love to see you there and we know that you'll have a great time. There are tons of fashion and make-up tips to be had not to mention the fashion shows on the catwalk.

We are delighted to have just started stocking a new range of baby clothing and babywear from Irish company, Patrick Francis.

Patrick Francis are a Dublin based design company who have been producing luxury clothing for over a generation. Traditionally known for their cashmere designs, they have also now developed a new line of baby clothing which is now available from Pressieport. We are always delighted to support Irish suppliers and designers, and in this case, even more so.

We know that these are going to be best-sellers because of their great quality, competitive pricing and, well, because we love their stuff!

Sometimes I think that we're spoiled here in Ireland with the amount of Bank Holidays we get, but then I look at our politicians and I see the holidays they get and I think, nah, we deserve it! So with another great weekend ahead of us, temperatures rising and the sun making ever more frequent appearances, we all start to move outdoors and take chances on not bringing our brollies everytime we leave the house.

FourSquare - is this the new Twitter craze?

Some of you may have read in the papers at the weekend about the new craze-app called Foursquare. Indeed, some of you may already have it on your phone (it works on more than the iPhone by the way).

This interesting app works by using a combination of the GPS features in your phone, coupling them with Google Maps and sitting the whole lot on an app that seems to be a mix of Twitter and Menupages ... or something like that.

How does it work? Well, I don't really know is the answer, but this is what it does. You go into your local coffee shop and sit down with your cuppa. You take out your phone and log in to Foursquare. Within seconds, Foursquare will locate you and be able to also tell you who else is in the area. You can Chek-In to whichever venue you are in and leave comments, tips or any other remarks you want. As you Check In to more and more places, you accummulate badges and points. The objective is to become the Mayor of a specific location - from what I can tell...

So what's so new about this? Well, what seems to be the main appeal of this app is that it brings the virtual and the real world together in a way that apps haven't managed to do yet. In addition to that, it is a social app and it has an element of gaming to it and therefor a compettive edge. People do find themselves competing to become the Mayor of their favourite haunts. And why wouldn't they?

More and more companies have begun to realize the benefits and potential of Foursquare. Companies such as Starbucks offer the Mayor of their local Starbucks free coffee or other perks for the priviledge of holding this office. What does this do for Starbuck's? Well, just imagine having your customers competing to be Mayor of your coffee shop? Gotta be good for business eh?

I love Apps!

Like many people, I gave in to the craze and got myself an iPhone (a fair while ago now) and haven't looked back once. The great about the iPhone is that you can't really get bored with it because it changes all the time, thanks to the everlasting supply of Apps.

There are now Apps for just about anything that you want and most of them do exactly what they say on the tin. Naturally, some are better than others and every so ofetn, you'll come across one with a 'wow' factor. Either because it does something really useful, or it does something and you can't quite work out how it does it or, in some cases, simply because it does something fun and useless.

Since I spend a lot of time in the App Store, I'll try and post some of my favourite apps in case you want to check them out. I even got in some App Magnets for those among you who are as nuts about them as I am!

We got these in recently for all you picnic lovers and festival goers. It is a really cool compact backpack picnic hamper and foldable seat all in one neat package.

These have just arrived in today. Perfect presents for all Apple geeks and for any true iPhone/iPod lover. These little magnets (about 2cm square each) come in a pack of 18, each magnet having its own graphic.

Each of the graphics represents an App just as it would appear on you iPhone or iPod. You can then use these to stick notes or whatever you want to your fridge or microwave. The ultimate way to get organised whilst still enjoying seeing your apps around you.

I was just having a quick look at our Blog to see when it was that a post was last put up. Would you believe that it was way back in October?! Since then, we've had Christmas, New Year, a ton of snow, a big freeze and now a monsoon!

At least we know that from now on the days get longer, the nights shorter and with a bit of luck, we'll have a great Spring and Summer!

Well, next stop is Valentine's Day which, can you believe it, is only about a month away?!

Anyway, I hope your year has got off to a good start and that this year will be better than last year...

Bank Holiday Opening Hours for Pressieport - October 2009

Here we are again, so soon... The end of the Summer (in case you missed it, it was back in May!).

The October Bank Holiday weekend is upon us again and although we won't make it down to the Cork Jazz Festival this year, I get the impression the rest of the country will be there. Let's hope the weather stays fine.

Our offices will be closed on Monday the 26th October and we will be re-opening on Tuesday morning.

A Very Tasty Menu

And now for some good news for a change...

Here at Pressieport we are thrilled to be bringing you the Menu range. We love the clean designs, beautiful finish and overall quality of their products. At Menu, their criteria are all about designing beautiful and original useful objects.

The pattern used on the tableware range we are launching was originally designed by Verner Panton, an influential Danish designer whose style very much embodied the 60s look. His 's' chair and 'cone' chair remain design classics to this day, and many of his designs are still in production. Geometri 1 was designed as part of an overall design commission for the Astoria Hotel in Trondheim in Norway. Panton used innovative positioning of furniture and lighting to give a sense of intimacy in the large open space of the dining room.

Back To School...

Yes, it's back to school time of year which of course means that the traffic (in Dublin at any rate) gets worse and we have to get up that bit earlier to get to work on time. If the traffic is giving you a pain and you need to express yourself just check out Drivemocion!

Of course, all the little Junior Infants always look so cute as they head off in their brand new uniforms, excited, nervous, terrified! And of course the mums aren't much better!

Baby Boom!

I read in the paper the other day that we are in the middle of a Baby Boom in Ireland and I would certainly believe it! Apparently we're trending as much as 5-6% ahead of predicted numbers of births and have been for the last number of years. This certainly explains why our most popular item this Summer has been the Travelling High Chair! Lots of babies and toddlers went on holidays this year and were able to sit comfortably with the adults on a 'Big' chair.

Of course, Baby Boom also means lots of new arrivals - and I can see the proof of that with all my friends. There is a procession of new arrivals, each one cuter and pinker than the one before. That's where our baby gift range is so handy - all sorts of lovely gifts at all price ranges and overnight delivery as well or same day if you live in Dublin! It couldn't be easier.

The Good Life

I know I have been raving about Joseph Joseph for the last few weeks, but I have to give them one more mention. I really love all their range, and it's well worth checking out for a gift or yourself.

Many of us have been enjoying growing out own fruit and vegetables this Summer, but as the autumn arrives only the most dedicated of gardeners are planning their autumn planting and preparing for the spring. For the rest of us fair weather gardeners, we are putting the tools in the shed and looking around for something else to occupy is.

Well, before you give up entirely on gardening as a hobby, don't forget that herbs can be grown all year round on your windowsill. And I personally think there is nothing nicer than seeing pots of herbs and other plants on the kitchen window sill. Golf Rained Off

I mentioned last week that I was going to 2 BBQs last weekend. As a gift for my hosts, who both happened to be golf fiends, I brought them along the Golf Barbecue Tool Set... which got a great reaction. Less well received was the rain which proceeded to pour down. I probably should have brought Golf Umbrellas!

I hate to mention it but 'back to school' is only round the corner. I always feel sorry for children as they barely seem to get their holidays when there are school uniforms and books in the shops. However, approaching the middle of August really is a time for thinking about books, copies, pencils, schoolbags... they need so much stuff! It's hard to make back to school appealing, but we do have some lovely Jaida and Princess Kiara backpacks and pencil cases if you're interested. Holidays & Bank Holidays

The August bank holiday always heralds the last dash for sunshine - particularly if, like this year, we haven't seen too much of it. Apparently many prospective 'staycationers' are giving up the ghost and last-minute bookings for foreign holidays have gone through the roof.

We were in Wexford last week, and the sun was making its best attempts to break through - rudely interrupted by a couple of all-day downpours, so you may need your brollie or your raincoat if you are staying in Ireland. However the weather forecast is promising some good weather for this weekend, so hopefully the barbecues I am going to on Saturday AND Sunday won't be rained off :)

I'll certainly be bringing along a something which is ideal for a Barbecue, party or on hols. It's my Boombox ghettoblaster - looks like an 80s boombox, sounds like an 80s boombox but is actually an mp3 player, made of cardboard - so can be discarded easily after the party (or barbecue or holiday) is over.

Or perhaps the X-mini tiny speakers would be even more impressive. They fit in the palm of your hand but pack a powerful punch with their bass speakers.

First The Stork, Then Pressieport!

The speed with which new mums leave hospital these days means they are often longer in the labour ward than anywhere else! Getting to see the new arrival is then a tricky one to handle. Do you dash in straightaway to see the poor mother looking shell-shocked and the baby in the middle of the 'green emissions' stage (and that has nothing to do with greenhouse gases!)? Or do you give them a 'few days' in which case they have been kicked out of the hospital and the new parents are in sleep deprivation mode, their lives controlled by The Twelve Inch Tyrant who seems to require minimal sleep and maximum yowling to keep going? They can barely see you let alone have a chat or make a cup of coffee. Not to mention the danger that they might ask you to hold the baby for a few minutes - or as I have frequently found, decide to discuss in detail the nappy contents of the new arrival as they offer you a chocolate biscuit...

And of course, then there's the gift dilemma. Do you risk buying an outfit for less than 12 months in the hopes that you will get to see the child in the first year? Perhaps it's better to send a 'My First Year' memento gift, so that when you do get to see the Little Mary or Tommy there is at least a record of that first year for you to admire?

Well, we've been faced with this dilemma so often at Pressieport (many fertile friends!) that we decided to at least solve the present-buying issue. We now have same day delivery in Dublin. So, whether you buy the 0-6 Johnny Socks or the Nappy Cake (3-6months) or the My First Year Photo frame, you can be sure it will arrive while the child is still in the right age bracket.

As for visiting the little darlings - well, you'll have to solve that dilemma yourselves. (21st Birthday invitations anyone?)

Joseph Joseph Arrives At Pressieport

I LOVE Joseph Joseph! Have done ever since I first saw the Chop To Pot. So needless to say, I was thrilled when Fred told me he was thinking of stocking JJ on Pressieport... this, of course, involved extensive research by me drooling - sorry, I mean trawling, through their brochure and considering each and every item in their range.

All the stock arrived in last week - ah bliss! The happy hours spent going through all the different boxes and looking at all those bright, shiny new gadgets. And, I'm happy to say, they're on the website now just waiting for you all to get your sticky little mitts on them :)

Check out the 'Index' Chopping Boards. It's a metal upright container holding 4 colour coded 'index card' style chopping boards. No cross contamination here. Each one has a designated use and is easily distinguished one from the other.

The Nests are my other favourite. All your kitchen utensils stacked one inside the other in one neat and colourful set. Handy to store, easy to find, lovely to look at!

Of course, the downside of getting all these Gorgeous Gadgets is that someone may start expecting you to cook... hold firm I say. With stuff that looks this good, you can just call it modern art !

Big sound from small things!

We now have the full range of X-mini speakers in from X-mini. Now there are a few different versions, but I'll try and explain the fifference very quickly, in a few minutes. The single most remarkable thing about these little monsters, is the volume that they generate. When you hold one in your hand and brace yourself for the sound for the first time, it will probably take you by surprise.

The speakers are generally capsule-shaped with a high quality rubberised or metal finish in either black or red (or both). They have integrated power cells (batteries) which can be recharged via the USB cable of your laptop or charger. A full charge will yield between 5-7 hours of amazing sound.

They have won several prestigious awards including the 'Gift of the Year Award' and the Red Dot Design Awards.

These are the models we have in at the moment and the main feature/difference between each model:-

X-Mini Capsule - this is a single speaker unit with fantastic sound (as they all have) which is available in either Red or Black

X-Mini Max - is the twin/stereo version of this capsule shaped range - available only in black

X-Mini II or 2nd Generation - this again is a single unit speaker but with higher output for more powerful sound.

All the units can interestingly be connected in a 'daisy-chain' manner if you ever wanted to, and as each extra speaker is added, the volume grows and grows. We tried it and it was really quite cool.

Travel Tips

We're looking for Top Tips for Travelling!

I was out at the airport last Saturday, at 5AM! I thought it was busy but really that was nothing. Between 5.30 and 6AM it was bedlam. So, first top tip - leave loads of time, because you may have checked in online, you may be confident your bags aren't over the weight restrictions (Balanzza anyone??) but that is what everyone is doing. The shortest queue was for people who were checking in the old fashioned way!

And wait till you see the queues to get through security. In fairness, they did seem to be doing their best, but there are still only 2 security entrances, no matter how many people show up.

Anyone else with any top tips, let us know.

That rhyme has been around since Elizabethan times and each July 15th we still look out and wonder are we in for forty days of rain or sun.
As this year seems likely to be chalked up to rain AGAIN, we are trying to cheer ourselves up here in the Pressieport office by thinking about our Summer Holidays. Luckily for us, we are paid to spend time surfing the web - strictly for research you understand, so we can make sure we're bringing all of you the best choice of fun, handy and original gift ideas!

We've found quite a few gadgets that we're pretty sure you'll want for yourselves and not to give away. Check our out new X-mini speakers - they may be small but they're very LOUD!

Finally, a site for dads Dad.ie !

We spend our time surfing the web here at Pressieport (when we're not running around working that is...) and we always love to see new Irish websites appearing. One such site was set up recently by David Caren, a new dad, who noticed that although mummies have loads of sites to go to for fun and advice, daddies had very little. Dad.ie provides information and content online for dads and dads-to-be and has enjoyed a huge rise in traffic over the past months.

The site is slick and funky and another we love about it is that they love our gadgets - or as Dad.ie called them, our Dadgets. Check out Dad.ie and don't forget to pass it on to your dad-friends!

Father's Day Sunday 21st June!

It never fails to amaze me how Dads love their barbecues! I noticed it particularly today when I mentioned barbecueing to the father of a friend of mine. His eyes lit up as he discussed best barbecue tools and his favourite sauces. As far as I knew, this was a man whose closest acquaintance with the kitchen was boiling a kettle, yet here he was telling me all about his secret recipe for a barbecue marinade.

I have also noticed amongst many friends that being a father gives them the opportunity to relive their childhood by playing with the toys they never had. Remote control toys are a particular favourite, which require Dad to spend a lot of time ‘showing’ little Johnny how to fly his helicopter or drive his car.

One of the things I love the most about the arrival of the summer, apart from the weather and the long evenings, is the start of the gardening season. I'm no expert gardener by any stretch of the imagination and I actually only tend to do gardening on a 'need to' basis, but every time I do finally tackle it, I always feel chilled and relaxed afterwards.

To get into the mood for gardening and to limit the potential damage I might unleash on the garden, I love to watch the highlights of the Chelsea Garden Show. This year it's on from the 19th to the 23rd of May and hosted as always by super-gardener, Alan Titchmarsh.

I was delighted to see that Dublin followed the example a few years back and decided to arrange and host the Bloom in the Park show. This year it will be taking place over the June Bank Holiday weekend and if the weather holds up, the place will be swamped with visitors. If you haven't been to this show before, then go to it. It gets better every year and even if you are not a keen gardener, you'll love the event.

Yes, today is officially the first day of summer! From here on in, it's all barbecues, holidays and sun.... Well, in theory anyway.

Here in Dublin, the day started off hesitantly with an overcast sky. Unable to decide what to do, it then decided to drizzle and then rain heavily. Having done that for about 2 hours, it then got bored and decided to let the sun shine. Let's just see what the rest of the day and indeed, the weekend, has in store for us.

Since it's a Bank Holiday weekend here, I was trying to work out what to do so as not to waste the time off. This evening I'm meeting a friend of mine for a bite to eat after work - we haven't seen each other in too long. Tomorrow, I'm meeting my little brother (not so little anymore...) in town to take custody of my baby nephew for a full day's baby-sitting (I may need a hand with this one)...

Then Sunday should hopefully, weather permitting, allow some emergency gardening to be done. I'm nearly convinced that I saw gazelle behind some of the shrubs, but I could be wrong. Monday, I am leaving deliberately plan-free so that I can just chill and do whatever I feel like.

So, for the moment, I wish you all a happy May Day.

Well we have another Bank Holiday weekend coming up this weekend and I don't know about you, but I know that I'm certainly looking forward to it.

So, just in case you're looking for us, we will be closed on Monday the 4th May 2009 for the day.

What that means to you is that if you order before tomorrow at 2pm, we will despatch your order immediately for receipt on Tuesday 5th May.

If you order after 2pm tomorrow, we will process your order on Tuesday when we get back and you should have it by Wednesday (within Ireland).

I came across this on TED.com - an amazing website, for those of you who are not familiar with it. Check it out and I promise, you'll learn loads.

One of the featured speakers some time ago was a guy called Anand Agarawala - a techie type from the States. He made a presentation on his new invention called Bumptop. I signed up for it 5 months ago and only got my invitation to try it out 2 days ago. The funny thing (yeah, I was rolling around the place....!) is that it went 'public' today! So now everyone can download it and try it out.

Watch the video and see what you think - I'd love to hear your feedback. Is this a great step forward in Desktops or is it just me?!

Mother’s Day, or Mothering Sunday as it is known by some, is celebrated in many countries around the world and on many different dates. In Ireland (and indeed the UK) it traditionally falls exactly 3 Sundays before Easter Sunday.

Although there are many different variations and histories behind the idea of this celebration, it is thought that the most likely origin for this event was in the 16^th century when families would gather at their ‘mother church’ on the fourth Sunday of Lent. This became special event in that, for many people, it was an occasion for them to meet and gather with other family members that they would otherwise normally not see, due to work or other reasons.

Today the tradition continues and is mostly a day when children show their love and appreciation for their mothers by giving them gifts, cards, flowers or similar presents.

This year, Mother’s Day, falls on Sunday the 22^nd March (2009).

Well, I spent a horrible weekend having a very love/hate relationship with the snow.

Having decided to go to Birmingham at the weekend, I then found myself stranded at the airport overnight as Birmingham airport decided to close its runway (yep, they only have the one!). This left me with the lovely task of trying to get re-booked (along with 154 other stranded Aer Lingus travellers) on to a flight for the next day. This was followed by trying to find a hotel in a city which was already burtsing to capacity with snowbound commuters and then having to face the propect of getting only a few hours sleep before trecking back to the airport again....

Having got through that and eventually returned to work here at Pressieport, I found the weather had been getting steadily worse while I had been clearing my mailbox. So at about 4pm-ish, I decided to abandon ship and make my way home (I'm nearly finished ranting.....).

It took me almost 3 hours to get home (it normally takes about 20 minutes) and I can dafely say that I have never seen anything like it before. It was complete mayhem out there on the roads.

I don't blame anyone for the chaos though.... I mean, no one had any idea it was going to snow or that there might be a cold snap, so why would we have expected any salt-gritters out beforehand!

Ah well, happy Wednesday!!

One thing that always surprises me at Pressieport is what is popular and what isn't. We thankfully get it right more often than not, but sometimes, things do catch us by surprise. Baby Cubes are one such gift.

Not having any need for these myself, I probably didn't realise how practical these little accessories to mums around the country. Its actually surprising to me that this has taken so long to come up with... A simple idea, even obvious some might say, but this is the first time it has appeared on the market.... and pressieport.ie is proud to be the first and probably the only outlet in Ireland to have this little gizmo.

Its called the Drivemocion - it sticks to the back window of you car or SUV or tractor or whatever you drive. On the windscreen, you have the control module with 5 buttons - each of which produces a different result when pressed. You can give the car behind you a Smiley...or, something else... You can even apologise and wink at them if you're feeling frolicky :-)

Each time you press one of the buttons, it wirelessly sends a signal to the rear display unit which then illuminates with a smiley or words. Really quite cool and great fun to play with in traffic.

It needs little or no installation - just 2 suction cups to be stuck on and absolutely no wiring required. It even has a sleep function so that if it detects that your car hasn't been moving for a few minutes, it'll go to standby mode to save on battery life.

Now I am a self-confessed techno freak. I love any new games, gadgets, inventions and what have you that hits the shops. But have you ever noticed the way tastes do a full 360 degree turn every so often? ABBA hit the charts in the 70's and then dissapeared only to hit the charts again every four or five years... Retro is all in again at the moment when it comes to home furnishings, fashion, even Dr Who is back in!

Here is another classic that is making a comeback along with many of the traditional board games - Dominoes.

Isn't it about time you switch off your XBox or Widescreen and spent some time with other humans? Well, this is a good way to start! Try it - I bet you've forgotten how much fun it is.

Valentine's Day is around the corner...

Well, I will be getting in chocs and wine and all the usual stuff, but here's something a bit more original and it'll last well after St. Valentine's Day.

Its the 'I Love You' Egg. It comes as an egg (same size as a standard egg) resting on a bed of straw, in a transparent can. All you do is open the can, add water and follow the instructions. In 5-7 days, a bean sprouts up with the message 'I Love You' on the bean!

Now isn't that a bit different?!

I like this particular one but I'm definitely going to get a wider variety in because they really have been a favourite with Pressieporters. Its basically a rubber ball with a long red rubber tongue. The dog grabs the ball and ends up looking a bit.... well... I'll let you decide how to describe it :-)

Its called a Humunga Tongue and it doesn't require batteries!

Not only is it practical, but it looks really sexy and is extremely easy to set up. On the downside, its very likely that you'll find yourself staring at it like a rabbit does at oncoming cars. It will probably shock you as much as it did me, when you see how much electricity you are using at home. This is what it looks like...

Its about 7 inches long and works wireless to read how much electricity your home or business is using. It then display this information in real-time in either Watts or in Euro to show you how much your using. The display works in two parts (both controllable). You can view the information on the top of the unit, but on top of that, the 'mood' lights change depending on how much you're using up. So if you're using a lot of electricity, the lighting underneath glows red to let you know.

You can connect Wattson to your computer also which allows you to download the information to your PC and see how much you've been using, when you were using the most or least and also to compare it to other days or weeks. This is done through Holmes, the application which works alongside Wattson, to help you keep an eye on your usage.

They say solar panels repay their cost over 7-10 years. This little unit repays itself over 2 years! The only downside to having one of these is that you'll find yourself switching off more and more things until eventually, you may end up living in the dark...
It really is very addictive and more to the point, its likely to be one of the best green actions that you're likely to take that will have an immediate impact on what you are doing to the environment and your bank account.
It has won numerous awards in Stuff Magazine and the the Guardian to name just two. You'll be hearing a lot more about this one in the future!

The R2 DAB Radio from Vita Audio

This is probably one of the coolest new developments in audio technology. The DAB Radio! What makes it different to conventional radio?

DAB Radios receive their signals digitally which allows a lot more scope for what the radio can do. Apart from the superior, no-hissing sound quality, the technology allows you to view scrolling information on the radio's panel. The broadcasting station sends out information such as contact numbers, program details, song information, the quality and speed of the signal to name just a few possibilities. This little thing is not something that you're going to see in someone else's place - this is a piece of the highlife!

All that aside, it is probably the ultimate in audio experience and all in a smart, sleek unit.

The R1 (or single speaker) model of the radio will be coming on to the site in the next few days.
